What to Expect
Application and Enrollment
The application opens in January for 4 weeks. After that, YouthForce NOLA team will carefully review applications and let you know if you were accepted into the internship program. If accepted, our team will support you through the enrollment and paperwork process.
Training
In the early summer, typically late May through June, interns will receive training on soft skills and work readiness skills, including:
Personal Mindset
Planning for Success
Social Awareness
Communication
Collaboration
Problem Solving
Personal Pitch
Résumé Writing
Interview Skills
During training, you’ll have the chance to see all of the businesses and roles that are available. You’ll share your preferences with the YouthForce NOLA team, and we’ll place you with an appropriate partner. Everyone will be placed, but not everyone gets one of their top choices.
Matching and Internship
Then, interns will be partnered with a local business or organization, where they will work on tasks and projects developed by their company. The experience mirrors a real job, with interns working about 25 hours per week for roughly five weeks (late June - late July). The internship ends with a capstone presentation, giving interns a chance to present what they've learned.
During the program, interns are expected to check their email daily, dress professionally, and complete all required assignments. Most importantly, interns should be open to growth!

Here’s what you should know:

Make sure you answer all questions before submitting your application.

No. We will only consider applications completed by the application deadline. We recommend submitting your application as early as possible to avoid any last-minute stress.
If you have any technical difficulties submitting your application, please email us at internship@youthforcenola.org.
-
You must have an Orleans Parish address to be eligible for the YouthForce NOLA Internship program. If you have multiple addresses and only one is in New Orleans, use that one. If you have multiple addresses in New Orleans, pick the one where you’d like to receive mail (e.g. your completion certificate) from us.
-
Please do your best in English. It’s helpful for us to understand how well you communicate in English, and your score won’t be negatively affected by English not being your first language.
-
Each application is reviewed by two people on the YouthForce NOLA team. When we review applications, the three most important things we’re looking for are:
Interest in careers in one or more of our region’s well-paying, high-demand industry clusters (digital media/IT, health sciences, skilled crafts, and business services), or an interest in exploring various careers.
Motivation to participate in and complete the program (both the work-readiness training and the internship).
Openness to growth over the course of the summer!
We also give each application a score for verbal communication, based on the video interview, and written communication, based on your short answer responses. We believe thoughtful short-answer and video responses also indicate that you put effort into your application and are committed to this opportunity.
Finally, we ask for information about your career-related coursework from your school. If you’ve completed career-related coursework, you’ll receive a bonus on your application score.
-
The video allows us to get to know you much better than we can through written responses alone. We also believe the video is an important practice for you because video interviews are becoming common in hiring processes. The Internship Program is all about preparing you for the world of work and life after high school, and that starts with the application. Preparing your responses, answering interview questions, and completing video interviews is great practice for the future.
-
Breathe! We understand that you may be nervous, and we don’t expect you to be perfect. Here are some tips:
Review the questions and jot down your answers before filming your video.
Take some time to practice in front of the mirror, in front of your family, or with a friend.
Once you know what you want to say (and know you can answer all the questions in 3 minutes or less), you’re ready. Just hit ‘Record’ and start talking!
If something happens in the background or you run out of time and get cut off, don’t stress. You have unlimited attempts to re-record your video.
Submitting an imperfect video is better than nothing! We give you all major points for just doing the video since we know that’s the biggest sign that you want to join the internship program.
-
If you’re using a phone, try resuming your application on a computer.
If you get to the video portion, but it won’t let you click to record → Try saving your progress, closing out of the application, and logging back in (after waiting for the email) on a different browser.
If you have questions not answered above, please email us at internship@youthforcenola.org.
